I´m beginning to understand why so many cultures worship a Mother goddess. At some point, in addition to cleaning and other housekeeping tasks, mothers have dealt with 3 to 5 year old kids.
In some ways, my intership is going wonderfully. I´ve started teaching English, using games such as "Red light, green light" and "The Hokey Pokey." The kids especially like the "shake it all about" part of the Hokey Pokey. As they are learning some English words, I´m also beginning to be able to understand them (ie, "Why do you have man shoes?" and "You have really big feet").
In fact, the kids love me! Unfortunately, they don´t actually listen to me. I suppose it doesn´t help that I don´t have the right words fast enough to say "Please share the slide with Damian" and "Don´t hit Mateo, please" when those phrases are needed. But a good portion of my time is spent trying to convince children that when I say they can´t spray water at each other with a hose, they really actually need to stop.
In contrast, the main teacher of the class, Sonya, can get all thirteen to sit down quitely, with their backs straight and their hands folded to listen to the different sounds of a maraca and a bell. Is it magic? As far as I can tell it is.

HaHaHaHa...I love your students' comments :) It sounds like they are really funny. I'm glad to hear that things are going well. And hang in there! I bet it will get easier to "persuade" them to behave as you start learning some of the tricks of the trade. Love you!
ReplyDeleteMy dear Em, when you were 3 to 5 we couldn't get you to listen enough to keep your pants on. So there could be some karma coming around here. Anyway, here's my suggestion for getting them to listen: Find out what the spanish phrase for, "Anyone who doesn't listen inmediatamente is in for some severe punishment!" and use it liberally. From my experience teaching English to 3-5 year olds in Ecuador, this gets good results.
ReplyDeleteAll 3 to 5 year olds don't listen. It's kinda annoying isn't it.
